Don’t you love it when you think you know what and why you’re doing something . . . and then it turns out to be something even bigger and better?

 

If you read my June post, “When the Divine Becomes Your Travel Agent,” you know I said yes to being one of the practitioners at a spiritual retreat on a farm in rural Portugal.

 

Before arriving, I knew my purpose was to provide Akashic sessions for the participants attending the retreat. These sessions were one of several modalities offered to hopefully initiate a new, deeper understanding of self for each guest.

By the end, I’d facilitated 20 sessions over five days – a new record for me! Being immersed in the Akashic Field for six hours daily, left me feeling incredibly blessed and energized.

 

I’d heard the Retreat described as “life changing.” What I didn’t anticipate was that it would also be life changing for me.

 

 

Over the past few years, I’d started making some assumptions without realizing it.

 

One was that men generally weren’t interested in spiritual exploration, particularly within the Akashic Field. This seemed reasonable since 99% of my clients and learners over the past two decades have been women. Gradually, I’d stopped energetically welcoming men and focused almost exclusively on women.

 

Another assumption was more subtle.

 

While I still believed in the basic goodness of humanity, I wasn’t seeing much in the world that felt encouraging. Too many refugees from so many wars, political confrontations, family conflicts, climate disasters, and countless other challenges dominated the headlines.

 

Without realizing it, I’d withdrawn into my own safe and happy bubble of family, friends, and Akashic work. I felt increasingly powerless to make any meaningful difference in the larger world.

 

Then Portugal happened.

 

 

There are too many stories to tell, so I’m focusing on my most important ones.

During our final gathering before everyone departed the next morning, participants and practitioners revealed what the week had meant to us. We laughed and cried with gratitude, and shared so many heartfelt hugs.

 

One person touched all of us deeply.

 

 

Karin, a woman in her late seventies, attended the Retreat between chemotherapy treatments for her fourth cancer diagnosis.

 

She had learned about the retreat only a week before it began. Calmly and confidently, she arranged her travel, packed her cane and CPAP machine, and trusted her body could carry her through the experience.

 

Throughout the week, Karin participated fully, always with a smile and bright eyes.

 

When she told us that this had been the best week of her life, we all joined her in tears of gratitude.

 

Her courage, trust, and presence touched every one of us.

When it came time for me to speak, I realized I was leaving Portugal with far more than when I’d arrived.

 

Yes, I had come to be of service.

 

And I was going home with a renewed vision of who I serve and a much more hopeful perspective on humanity.

 

The men at the Retreat outnumbered the women, both as participants and practitioners. Their questions for their Records reflected their deep desire to be the best husbands, fathers, and bosses that they could. So, obviously, I was wrong about men not being interested in spiritual experiences!

Everyone showed up fully from Day One. Their openness, vulnerability, willingness to grow, and genuine support for one another was inspiring.

 

They shattered an assumption I didn’t even realize I was carrying.

 

Even more importantly, the retreat reminded me that there are countless people throughout the world doing exactly what many of us hope for humanity. They’re gathering, learning, healing, supporting one another, exchanging ideas, and striving to make a positive difference in their communities.

 

These people are real.

And they are not rare.
Somehow, I’d lost sight of that.

 

 

I no longer feel like I’m living in an isolated spiritual bubble.

 

Instead, I’m grateful to know I’m part of a much larger community of people who are continually exploring, growing, and striving to become their best versions of themselves.

 

That realization alone made the journey worthwhile.

 

For me, one of the greatest gifts of any expansion experience is discovering where I’ve unknowingly placed limits around myself, others, or what’s possible.
